Painless treatment for Varicose Veins

Surgery

Until recently, stripping (pulling out) the vein was the standard surgical treatment for varicose veins. The operation was first described over 150 years ago. It requires a cut in the groin and leaves a bruised and painful, often swollen thigh. It is usually performed as a day case or with one night in hospital under a general anaesthetic. You usually require a week or two before returning to work. Some people suffer side effects from vein stripping surgery such as pain or discomfort, bruising (haematoma), nerve damage, and occasionally wound infection.

Vein stripping is not an appropriate choice for people who are pregnant, who have circulation problems of the legs, skin infections or blood-clotting defects. Some people get recurrence (further varicose veins form) and the risk is quoted at up to 50%.

NB: We no longer offer vein stripping as our first treatment choice.  There are newer more effective treatments such as VNUS Closure which often avoid the need for a general anaesthetic, with less discomfort and you are able to return to work within 24 hours. The majority of patients have excellent cosmetic results with no visible scars.

After your surgery

Following a general anaesthetic you will need someone to take you home. You will be given painkillers and provided with two pairs of compression stockings which need to be worn for up to four weeks. It is not permissible to drive for up to 10 days but driving may be resumed when you are able to comfortably perform an emergency stop. You should walk regularly throughout the day (3 or 4 twenty minute walks). We do not like you to fly short flights (up to 3 hours) for 3 weeks, and long haul flights for 6 weeks. You must wear your stockings for the flight.
