Painless treatment for Varicose Veins

VNUS Closure Procedure (Microwave)

Using 3D Duplex ultrasound monitoring and under local anaesthetic, a catheter is inserted into the vein from the knee towards the groin. The catheter tip emits microwaves inside the vein, and is gradually withdrawn destroying the vein as it goes. The remaining visible veins are dealt with by phlebectomy (tiny cuts to remove the veins) or sclerotherapy (injections). Because of the keyhole approach this can be performed under either local or general anaesthetic.

98% of patients who undergo the VNUS Closure procedure would recommend it to a friend or family member.

After your VNUS procedure

You will already be wearing the stockings we have put on your legs. You will need to wear these day and night for a week, walking one to two miles a day. After this you need to wear the stockings during the day only for a further week. Please get someone to drive you home as you shouldn’t drive until you can do so safely. The majority of people can drive the following day.

Most people have little or no pain, but some people get an ache in the thigh or calf after about 4 days. It is unusual to need painkillers but Paracetamol can be useful. You may get some bruising in the mid thigh or calf and, after about 2 weeks, most people will feel a cord inside the leg under the skin. This is the healing vein remnant and will disappear over the next few weeks. You should be able to return to work the day after your VNUS Closure procedure.

You will be given an appointment to come and see us after 2 weeks. There is no evidence of an increased risk of DVT on flying after VNUS Closure but to be on the safe side we recommend that you do not fly for 2 weeks (short haul flights up to 3 hours) and wait 4 weeks before flying long haul. You must wear your stockings for the flight.

Be proud of your legs
